Vidya Balan was born on 1 January 1978. She began her career at the young age of sixteen with a role in the television sitcom Hum Paanch. Subsequently she appeared in a number of television commercials and music videos.
Then in 2003 she made her debut in front of the camera with the Bengali film Bhalo Theko. In 2005, she acted in Parineeta, starring alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. The movie was fairly successful and Vidya’s acting in the film was widely appreciated.
In 2006 she once again starred alongside Sanjay Dutt in Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The movie was a huge commercial and critical success, and with this film Vidya Balan had arrived. The effervescent portrayal of her character in the film, struck just the right cords with audiences, who now wanted to see more of her.
But, in the following years she acted in films like Heyy Baby (2007) and Kismat Konnection (2008), and in both the films she seemed completely out of place. Her fashion sense in these films was heavily criticized and even made fun of, as she unsuccessfully tried her hand at looking glamorous.
Fortunately, her experiences made her wiser and she went on to essay roles which had plenty of substance in them. Films like Paa (2009), Ishqiya (2010), No One Killed Jessica (2011), The Dirty Picture (2011), and Kahaani (2012) established her not only as one of the top actresses in Bollywood, but also proved the fact that she is one of the best acting talents Bollywood has seen in many years.
Balan has received one National Film Award, four Filmfare Awards and five Screen Awards, which bear testimony to her talent and hard work. As far as her personal life is concerned, she in December 2012 married Siddharth Roy Kapoor who is the head honcho at UTV, one of India’s largest film production companies.
