Sunil Shetty was born on 11 August 1961. In 1992 he made his Hindi film debut with Balwaan. Then in 1993 he starred in Pehchaan and which did moderately well at the box-office. But, in the same year he also starred in Waqt Hamara Hai, which did really well at the box-office.
It was in 1994 with Mohra that Sunil really arrived in Bollywood. The movie was a huge commercial success and Sunil was branded as an action star. In the same year he also acted in Dilwale and Gopi Kishan. Dilwale was a romantic film and saw him play a role in contrast to his onscreen tough guy image.
Through the 1990’s Sunil acted in a number of films and a majority of them were action films. Filmmakers were well aware that Sunil was a bit deficient when it came to acting abilities, but realized that the audiences loved watching him in action films. In 1997 he acted in Bhai which was a commercial success.
Bhai again saw him play a role that was in contrast to his image, although the film did have action to please the audiences. In the following years Sunil acted in a number of films like Refugee (2000), Qayamat: City Under Threat (2003) and LOC Kargil (2003).
He also ventured into comedy roles in hit films such as Hera Pheri (2000), Awara Paagal Deewana (2002), Phir Hera Pheri (2006) and De Dana Dan (2009). He won a Filmfare Award for Best Villain in 2001 for his performance in Dhadkan (2000).
He also turned producer and launced a company named Popcorn Motion Pictures Ltd. His company has produced films like Khel – No Ordinary Game (2003), Rakht: What If You Can See the Future and Bhagam Bhag (2006). In 2011 he starred in Thank You, which performed averagely at the box-office.
