Sridevi was born on 13 August 1963. She is the daughter of Ayyapan and Rajeswari. She made her acting debut as a child in regional cinema. Then in 1975 she made her Hindi film debut with Julie, this too was as a child artist.
She then went on to act in a number of regional films in the South and became a known face there. Then in 1983 she acted in the Hindi film Sadma in which she was in a starring role. The film was a huge critical success and also did well at the box-office.
Bollywood filmmakers now got up and took notice of this highly talented actress. Subsequently she starred in a number of Bollywood films like Nagina (1986), Mr. India (1987), Chandni (1989), ChaalBaaz (1989), Lamhe (1991), Khuda Gawah (1992), Gumrah(1993) and Judaai (1997). Each of these films and many others like these became huge commercial and critical successes, thus establishing her as the biggest star in Bollywood in the 90s.
She then took a hiatus from Bollywood and recently made a comeback with the Hindi film English Vinglish. The film was a huge critical and commercial success and its success can be purely credited to Sridevi alone. After watching this film people realized that Sridevi after so many years still had the magic in her to enthrall her audience.
As far as awards and accolades are concerned she has received many, amongst them are four Filmfare awards two of which are Best Actress awards for Hindi films and the other two are Best Actress awards for regional films.
In 2013 she also received the country’s fourth highest civilian award the Padma Shri. As far as personal life is concerned, she is married to film producer Boney Kapoor and has two daughters with him.
