Mallika Sherawat was born Reema Lamba on 24 October. She began her career with modeling and made her Hindi film debut with a cameo in the film Jeena Sirf Mere Liye.
But, it was in 2003 in the film Khwahish in 2003 that she received the starring role. Her role in the film was considered pretty bold for the time and prompted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt to cast her in the film Murder in 2004.
This film helped establish her as the sex symbol of Bollywood and in fact that tag became synonymous with her. She then appeared in the successful romantic comedy Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006) which won her much critical acclaim. Since then, she has appeared in successes like Aap Ka Suroor – The Real Love Story, Welcome (both 2007) -her biggest commercial success so far- and Double Dhamaal (2011).
She is one of the few Bollywood stars trying to crossover to Hollywood, with films like Hisss (2010) and Politics of Love (2011). In 2012 she was in a special appearance in an item number in the film Tezz. Then again in 2012 she acted in the film Kismat Love Paisa Dilli.
Unfortunately, both Tezz and Kismat Love Paisa Dilli fared badly at the box-office and were also panned by the critics. Even her item number in Tezz did not garner her much publicity. The problem is, presently there are a large number of new actresses vying for the sex symbol tag and apparently Mallika is left far behind in this race.
Well, she has two movies in the pipeline, one is a called Lucky Unlucky and the other is called Dirty Politics. One can only hope, these forthcoming movies help revive her flagging career.
