Govinda was born on 21 December 1963. Govinda’s father Arun Ahuja was failed Bollywood producer and his mother was Nirmala Devi. Govinda made his Hindi film debut with Ilzaam in 1986. In the 1990’s he starred in a string of hits making him one of the biggest Bollywood stars of the 90’s.
Films like Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), Aankhen (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Hero No. 1 (1997), Deewana Mastana (1997), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) and Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999) we all huge commercial successes and are remembered even today. Incidentally all these films were made by David Dhawan, who through the 90’s relied one else but Govinda to deliver him a box-office hit. In fact, their name became synonymous with comedy films, which was the trend of sorts set by the two in the 90’s.
Unfortunately, Govinda’s career graph took a downturn with the advent of the 2000’s. His acting career was further affected when he contested and won the seat for Member of Parliament from Mumbai North in the 2004 parliamentary elections.
It seemed as if Govinda would bid adieu to films for good. But, his stint in politics didn’t go too well either and he decided to make a comeback to films. In 2006 he acted in his comeback film Bhagam Bhag. The movie was a huge commercial success.
In 2007 he again joined hands with David Dhawan when he acted in Partner. The movie was a huge commercial success and it seemed like Govinda had made a successful comeback into films after his hiatus. In 2009 he acted in Life Partner which did fairly well at the box-office.
But, in the subsequent years all the films he has acted in like Do Knot Disturb, Raavan, Run Bhola Run, Naughty @ 40 have fared badly at the box-office.
