Aishwarya Rai who likes to be known as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after marriage, was born on 1 November 1973. She began her career as a model and then went on to win the Miss World Pageant in 1994.
She made her acting debut with the Tamil film Iruvar in 1997. Again in the very same year she made her Hindi film debut starring opposite Bobby Deol in Aur Pyar Ho Gaya, which was panned by both the critics and the audiences.
In 1998 she made another Tamil film ‘Jeans’, which was her first commercial success. In 1999 she acted in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, alongside Salman Khan who she was dating at that time. The film was a huge success and Aishwarya won Filmfare Best Actress Award for her efforts. She repeated the feat with Devdas in 2002, where she was cast opposite Shahrukh Khan.
In the years to come, she starred in a number of commercially successful films like Dhoom 2 (2006), Guru (2007), Jodhaa Akbar (2008) and Enthiran (2010). She also pleased the critics with her performances in films like Chokher Bali (2003), Raincoat (2004), Provoked (2007) and Guzaarish (2010).
Aishwarya has tried to gain foothold even in Hollywood with films like The Last Legion; starring alongside Sir Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth, and Thomas Sangster and The Pink Panther 2; starring alongside Steve Martin, Jean Reno and Emily Mortimer. Neither film has unfortunately done much to enhance her career in Hollywood. On the upside, in 2009 she was awarded the fourth-highest civilian award in India, Padma Shri. Then in 2012 she was honored with Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, which is the second-highest Order Of France.
As far as personal life is concerned, Aishwarya married Abhishek Bachchan in 2007 and two now have a daughter named Aaradhya, who they welcomed into this world on 16 November 2011.
